Peter Obi condemns proposed salary increase for political office holders

Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, has strongly criticised a proposal from the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission to increase the salaries of political office holders by over one hundred percent.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Obi described the move as a “shameless grab for more” that comes at the expense of Nigeria’s struggling majority.

Obi argued that the proposed salary hike is completely unjustifiable and demonstrates what he called the “greed and insensitivity” of the country’s political leadership.

He expressed solidarity with Nigerians who have questioned both the necessity and the timing of such a proposal, particularly given the current economic challenges facing ordinary citizens. The former Anambra State governor emphasised that political office should be viewed as an opportunity to serve the nation rather than as a means to accumulate personal wealth.

He further criticised the Commission for what he characterised as prioritising the financial interests of politicians over the needs of underpaid security personnel, especially police officers who face difficult working conditions.

Obi called on the government to redirect its focus toward improving the living conditions of public workers, whom he described as the true backbone of the country.

Peter Obi urged the RMAFC to prioritise the welfare of all Nigerians, particularly those in public service who he believes have been neglected for too long.
