Academic activities across Nigerian universities are on the verge of a major disruption as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) mobilises for a potential nationwide strike.
This development threatens to end over two years of uninterrupted academic sessions in the country’s higher education institutions.
According to information from a reliable source within ASUU’s National Executive Committee (NEC), the union leadership is preparing to convene a crucial meeting that will determine the timeline for industrial action.
A NEC member who heads one of the union’s branches in the North West region expressed disappointment with the Bola Tinubu administration’s approach to addressing staff welfare concerns, stating that the government has been handling these critical issues with insufficient seriousness.
The anonymous NEC representative confirmed that strike action remains a primary option under consideration, noting that the union has provided the government adequate time to address their concerns.
The mobilisation process is currently underway, with the ASUU National President expected to call for a NEC meeting imminently to decide on the final course of action. This potential strike would mark a significant setback for Nigeria’s education sector, which has enjoyed relative stability since the resolution of the last major ASUU strike that lasted for eight months.
