A former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Usman Yusuf, has launched a strong critique against Nigeria’s state governors, accusing them of deliberately misleading President Bola Tinubu about the severe levels of hunger afflicting the nation.
Yusuf asserted that state governors are responsible for over 80% of the country’s problems, arguing that they are failing to utilise increased funds for the public good.
In a recent television interview, Usman Yusuf directly addressed the President, stating that the true extent of the suffering is being concealed from him.
He challenged the official narrative, expressing deep scepticism about government claims, such as the distribution of N419 billion in conditional cash transfers, and demanded accountability for where these funds actually went.
Yusuf acknowledged the President’s action in redirecting subsidy savings to state governments but highlighted a critical disconnect: despite governors receiving significantly more money, there is a conspicuous absence of tangible development or relief for citizens on the ground.
He painted a picture of governors indulging in international travel and acquiring foreign properties while Nigerians face starvation.
Usman Yusuf placed the responsibility for local development, including job creation, and the construction of schools and hospitals, squarely on the governors, whom he accused of stifling local governments and hoarding funds.
While he commended President Tinubu’s efforts to liberate local government finances from state control, he questioned the effectiveness of these measures, concluding that the governors continue to withhold resources, leaving the populace with nothing to show for the increased revenue.
