The Federal Government has acquired a significant 200-hectare parcel of land within the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos for the development of a dedicated building materials hub.

This initiative is a strategic move aimed at substantially reducing the nationwide cost of housing production. The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Ahmed Dangiwa, announced the development during a recent tour of industrial areas located within the Lekki and Lagos Free Zones.

Minister Dangiwa explained that the primary objective of this hub is to aggressively promote the use of local content within Nigeria’s construction sector.

By encouraging and facilitating domestic manufacturing of building materials, the government intends to curb the escalating costs of construction, support sustainable housing delivery, and reduce the country’s heavy reliance on imported products.

The minister further revealed that this model is part of a broader national strategy, with plans to establish similar specialized hubs in each of the country’s six geopolitical zones.

A key feature of the Lagos hub will be its integration with a comprehensive intermodal transport infrastructure. This includes direct access to seaports, airports, railways, and road networks, which is designed to ensure highly efficient logistics and distribution operations for manufacturers and end-users.

The minister also confirmed that a private investor has already been secured to commence the project’s development. This partnership is expected to not only stimulate local production and save valuable foreign exchange but also to generate a considerable number of jobs through the expansion of the domestic manufacturing ecosystem, thereby contributing to national economic growth.
