Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has officially inaugurated the National Building Code Advisory Committee (NBCAC), a significant step toward repositioning Nigeria’s construction industry on a foundation of robust standards, regulations, and professionalism.
The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, performed the inauguration ceremony at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
During his address, the minister reiterated the urgent necessity for a unified National Building Code, citing the absence of effective town planning, the frequent incidence of building collapses, destructive fires, environmental abuse, and other preventable disasters as key reasons for this initiative.
He further explained that the committee was established to address critical issues plaguing the sector, including a lack of referenced design standards for professionals, the prevalent use of non-professionals and quacks, the application of untested building materials, and an overall poor maintenance culture.
Minister Ata emphasised that the National Building Code serves as one of the most vital regulatory instruments for Nigeria’s built environment.
It establishes mandatory minimum standards covering all phases of construction, from pre-design and design to construction and post-construction, to ensure quality, safety, and professional proficiency across the industry.
The newly inaugurated committee is tasked with guaranteeing that every home, office, school, hospital, and public assembly structure in Nigeria is built to specifications that prioritise safety, durability, and sustainability.
The minister described the committee’s reconstitution as a strategic measure to safeguard lives, protect investments, and restore public confidence in the construction sector.
In his response, the committee chairman, Arc. Mohammed Jimoh Faworaja, pledged the group’s full commitment to applying their professional expertise and integrity to the role. He also promised to collaborate closely with state governments to encourage the development and domestication of building codes at the subnational level.
