The Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (KGIRS) has announced a remarkable increase in its monthly internally generated revenue, which now stands at over three billion naira.

This figure represents a substantial rise from the seven hundred and fifty million naira recorded monthly in 2021. The Chairman of KGIRS, Salihu Enehe, made this disclosure during a stewardship and accountability forum organised by the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in the state.

Enehe, who was appointed chairman in November 2021, recalled that upon assuming office, staff morale was critically low due to inadequate welfare packages. He identified boosting employee confidence as a primary step toward improving revenue collection.

To achieve this, his administration constituted a committee focused on staff promotion, making it an annual exercise to motivate workers. This initiative, coupled with extensive training and retraining programs, significantly enhanced staff efficiency and productivity, which directly contributed to the revenue surge.

The chairman also highlighted other reforms, such as the harmonisation of land use and ground rents into a single payment, which helped eliminate the problem of multiple taxation. While acknowledging that illegal revenue collection on roads remains a challenge, particularly due to resistance from local government officials, Enehe stated that the service has made tremendous improvements in curbing the practice.

Looking ahead, the chairman revealed a projection to increase monthly revenue to four billion naira.

He expressed optimism that achieving autonomy for the service would further enhance its efficiency and capacity to fulfil its corporate social responsibilities, enabling it to operate independently from the regular civil service structure.
