The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has initiated a comprehensive nationwide campaign aimed at addressing the growing concerns over disorderly student behavior during graduation “sign-out” celebrations.
The campaign was officially launched on Tuesday at the federal secretariat in Bauchi by the Director-General of the agency, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu.
The tradition of sign-out celebrations, popular among secondary and tertiary institution students, involves using permanent markers to inscribe signatures and messages on school uniforms or plain white t-shirts as a way to commemorate the completion of an academic phase.
While intended to mark a significant milestone, the NOA has raised alarms regarding the conduct exhibited by some participants during these events, which often deviates from acceptable social norms.
Issa-Onilu expressed deep concern over the unruly behavior that has come to characterize these celebrations in certain areas, emphasizing that such practices can no longer be tolerated.
He stated the urgent need for a collective stand against these actions to preserve discipline and decency in academic celebrations.
The campaign is designed to reach all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and all 774 local government areas through a multi-faceted approach. This will include organized press conferences, town hall meetings, targeted school visits, market rallies, public roadshows, and strategic advocacy visits to key stakeholders.
Beyond addressing student conduct, the broader initiative will also focus on critical areas such as national security awareness, values re-orientation for the youth, and reinforcing respect for Nigeria’s national identity and symbols. The campaign represents a significant effort to promote responsible citizenship and preserve the integrity of academic traditions across the country.
