The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has urged policy implementers across Nigeria to fully adopt its newly revised Basic Education Action Plan template.

This updated framework is designed to eliminate the persistent administrative bottlenecks that have prevented states from accessing an estimated N68 billion in dormant funds earmarked for the improvement of basic education.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Aisha Garba, made this call during the opening of a training workshop in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The event was organised for Directors and Desk Officers from the Department of Physical Planning within the South-South States Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEB).

Dr. Garba, who was represented by her Special Assistant, Ibrahim Gold, explained that the failure of states to meet the requirements for accessing the funds was due to complexities stemming from slow utilisation and systemic inefficiencies within the previous planning system.

The revised action plan, which was first officially unveiled at a meeting in Makurdi on May 25th, 2025, marks a significant shift towards results-based planning and enhanced financial accountability.

The primary goal of the Uyo workshop is to equip the key personnel responsible for planning and execution in their respective states with these new tools and support systems.

Both the Director of Physical Planning at the commission, Alhaji Sadiq Saiad, and the Executive Chairman of Akwa Ibom SUBEB, Dr. Aniette Etuk, addressed the participants.

They emphasised the importance of the training and urged everyone in attendance to pay close attention to detail to fully grasp the intended purpose of the workshop and ensure the successful implementation of the new template.
