FCT Farmers Receive 50% Subsidy on Fertilizers to Boost Food Production

Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced a 50% subsidy on fertilisers for farmers across the six area councils of the nation’s capital.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance food security and support agricultural productivity. The Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, disclosed the subsidy during a ceremony in Abuja for the distribution of 550 metric tonnes of assorted fertilisers to local farmers.

The distributed fertilisers include conventional NPK, granular urea, NPK gel, and urea gel varieties.

The Minister’s Chief of Staff, Chidi Amadi, represented him at the event and emphasised that the program underscores the administration’s firm commitment to agricultural revitalisation and the welfare of its people.

He noted that ensuring food security is fundamental to maintaining dignity, stability, and peace, echoing concerns raised by international bodies like the FAO.

This support scheme is aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and has been institutionalised as an annual program to help ease production costs and significantly enhance farm yields. The timing of the distribution is strategic, coinciding with the current farming season to ensure that inputs reach farmers when they are most needed.

Minister Wike issued a strong caution against the diversion of these vital agricultural inputs, stressing that the fertilisers must reach the intended beneficiaries—genuine farmers—to effectively boost food production and security within the FCT.

Beyond input distribution, the FCTA plans to collaborate with international organisations, including the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Leventis Foundation, and the World Bank. These partnerships aim to provide essential capacity-building programs and enhance agronomic practices among local farmers for sustainable agricultural development.
