Delta State NLC Demands Wardrobe Allowance Following New Dress Code

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Delta State has called on the state government to provide a wardrobe allowance for civil servants following the introduction of a revised dress code policy.

This demand was made by the state NLC Chairman, Comrade Goodluck Oforbruku, during an interview in Asaba.

Comrade Oforbruku expressed strong dissatisfaction that the new policy was implemented without any prior consultation with labour representatives. He described the government’s move as insensitive, given the current economic hardships that many workers in the state are enduring.

The labour leader highlighted that numerous civil servants are already struggling to meet basic needs due to the rising cost of living and increasing family responsibilities. He argued that enforcing a stricter dress code would only add to their financial strain.

The NLC chairman urged the state government to back the policy with appropriate support, specifically the provision of wardrobe allowances, to help cushion the financial impact on workers.

This reaction comes after a circular from the Office of the Head of Service was issued on Tuesday, September 9th, 2025, which detailed the new prescribed dress patterns for employees across all grade levels.

While advising civil servants to maintain decency and professionalism in their appearance, Oforbruku also issued a warning against any victimization by heads of departments or supervisors. He encouraged workers to report such cases immediately to labour leaders. He firmly stated that any policy affecting workers, particularly one that imposes an additional financial burden, must be developed through proper stakeholder engagement.
