The Abia State Government has issued a stern warning to public school teachers against professional misconduct, negligence of duty, and chronic absenteeism, stating that such behaviours will now attract severe disciplinary actions.
Lydia Onuoha, Executive Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), delivered the warning on Tuesday in Umuahia, emphasising that violations could result in queries, suspension, or outright dismissal.
Onuoha expressed disappointment over the increasing cases of irregular attendance among teachers despite the Governor Alex Otti’s administration’s efforts to improve their welfare.
She noted that the state government has prioritised the timely payment of salaries and better working conditions, making teacher absenteeism unacceptable.
“This behaviour constitutes a gross breach of professional ethics and a betrayal of the trust placed in educators to shape future generations,” she stated.
The ASUBEB chairman warned that the government would strictly enforce the Public Service Rules and Teachers’ Code of Conduct, applying sanctions where necessary.
“The full weight of public service rules shall be invoked, and the government will not hesitate to act in the interest of our children and the state’s future,” she declared.
Governor Otti’s administration has invested significantly in education, including infrastructure upgrades and teacher welfare programs. Onuoha stressed that such commitments should be reciprocated with dedication from educators.
The government has directed school administrators to monitor teachers’ attendance closely and report defaulting teachers for disciplinary action.
While the move aims to improve service delivery in public schools, some stakeholders have called for balanced enforcement, ensuring that systemic challenges are also addressed.
The state government maintains that accountability is essential to achieving quality education and has vowed to sustain its monitoring efforts across all public schools.
