Members of the Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) community in Adamawa State have appealed to Hajiya Lami Fintiri, wife of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, to help facilitate the signing and domestication of a bill establishing the Disability Rights Commission in the state.
The Adamawa State House of Assembly passed the bill in March 2024, which seeks to outlaw discrimination against persons with disabilities and create a commission to protect their rights. However, the bill is still awaiting Governor Fintiri’s assent to become law. Once signed, it will officially prohibit discrimination against PLWDs and ensure their inclusion in various aspects of society.
Mr. Jibril Amzaranda, the North East Zonal Coordinator of the Blind Association of Nigeria, emphasized the importance of the bill during a press briefing in Yola on Friday. He highlighted the association’s efforts to engage the governor’s wife, given her history of supporting PLWDs through her Fresh Air Pro-Life Employment Foundation.
Amzaranda explained that the proposed law would mandate critical support services, including healthcare, rehabilitation, education, and vocational training for persons with disabilities. He stressed that the bill’s implementation would significantly reduce societal discrimination and improve opportunities for PLWDs in Adamawa.
“The First Lady has consistently shown compassion and support for our community, which is why we are calling on her to intervene and encourage the governor to sign this bill into law,” Amzaranda said.
The PLWDs community remains hopeful that with Hajiya Lami’s influence, the governor will expedite the signing of the bill, marking a major step toward inclusivity and equal rights for persons with disabilities in Adamawa State.
