The official website of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) crashed due to a massive influx of Nigerians attempting to register as members of the newly formed opposition coalition party.
The technical glitch occurred following a surge in online traffic, as citizens rushed to join what many are calling a “rescue coalition” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A social media user highlighted the issue on Friday, pointing out that the disruption was caused by overwhelming demand from Nigerians eager to align with the emerging political front. IntelRegion confirmed the incident, reporting that the website malfunctioned under excessive user traffic, leaving many unable to access the platform. The outage suggests the website’s infrastructure was unprepared for the sudden spike in visits, likely due to insufficient server capacity.
As of the time of reporting, the ADC had not released an official statement addressing the crash. The incident occurred just two days after the party was unveiled as the flagship platform for Nigeria’s new opposition alliance, which aims to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next election cycle.
A Facebook user, Unclè Anass Dukura, shared their experience of repeatedly encountering error messages while trying to access the site. “The public demand far exceeded what the platform was originally built to support,” the user noted.
The coalition was formally launched in Abuja on Wednesday, uniting prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, ex-Senate President David Mark, and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola. Other notable attendees included former APC National Chairman John Oyegun, ex-Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, and media mogul Dele Momodu.
Originally founded in 2005 as the Alliance for Democratic Change, the party rebranded as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after its registration by Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The recent website crash underscores the growing public interest in the coalition as a potential alternative to the current administration.
