The Super Eagles of Nigeria begin their journey to a fourth African Cup of Nations title today (Sunday) against the Nzalang Nacional of Equatorial Guinea at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium, Ebimpe Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Nigeria’s match against Equatorial Guinea will take off at 3 p.m. WAT on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
For the Super Eagles, who are trying to do it again after 11 years, commencing their campaign in Cote d’Ivoire with anything less than a win is simply out of the question.
Though underwhelming in their previous few games, which have generated doubts about the team’s competency, the Nigeria team’s skill is not to be underestimated, and opponents should be wary of evaluating them on games played outside of a true competition with a trophy on the line.

Equatorial Guinea is no stranger to upsetting stronger teams. They have always advanced beyond the group stage in their previous outings.
With a defense capable of dealing with the fury of the Super Eagles attack, led by reigning CAF African Player of the Year Victor Osimhen, and Nantes winger Moses Simon, a forward eager to capitalise on any opportunities that arise.
Victor Boniface has been ruled out of the competition due to an injury, but Nigeria will still have plenty of offensive options in Osimhen, captain Ahmed Musa, and Samuel Chukwueze.
Both Osimhen and Alex Iwobi, who were benched in the friendly against Guinea, should start in Abidjan.
Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka and Fulham’s Calvin Bassey are also significant performers.
Kelechi Iheanacho is uncertain following a recent injury, while Wilfred Ndidi, a Leicester City midfielder is out due to injury.
