Austine Eguavoen, technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), is set to assume command of the squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

Following Finidi George’s retirement as head coach of the Super Eagles in June, the NFF has failed to name a substantive replacement.

According to a reputable source within the NFF, Eguavoen might be tasked with directing the squad in both games.

“There is no way the new coach can take charge of the Super Eagles for the games against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

“The two games are less than three weeks away.

“He will be coming into a new environment and he has not worked with the players before. He can’t be saddled with the responsibility of inviting players to camp now.

“For now, everything is leaning towards the technical director (Eguavoen) leading the team for the two games.

“He is also expected to pick some local coaches for this short assignment,” the source said.

Recall that Eguavoen guided the Super Eagles to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon in an interim role, when Nigeria was eliminated in the round of 16.

On Saturday, September 7, the Super Eagles will meet neighbors Benin at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

The West Africans would go to Kigali three days later to maintain their meeting with Rwanda.
