Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and political organisation, has rejected efforts by certain Yoruba radicals to expel Igbo Nigerians from the South-West.
Afenifere advised all Nigerians residing lawfully in “any part of Yoruba land to entertain no fear about their safety or be afraid of being forced out of the area”.
The pledge was made in a statement issued by the organization’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, in response to a post by a non-descript social media profile dubbed ‘LagosPedia’ that advised Igbos residing in Lagos and South-West Nigeria to leave the area within one month.
The tweet, which went viral on Thursday and sparked concern in Lagos and other regions of South-West, also issued the Igbos a one-month deadline to leave the region.
The hashtag #Igbomustgo also encouraged all Yorubas in the South-East to “return home”.
The post states:
“Lagosians and every South-West stakeholders should prepare for the massive protest of #IgboMustGo on the 20th – 30th of August.
“They have 1 month from now to leave and relocate their business from all South-West states. We urge all Yorubas living in the South-East to return home.”
However, Afenifere not only dismissed the threat, but also stated that those behind the unjustified, aggressive, and divisive campaign “are out to cause disaffection among Ndigbo and Yorubas”.
Afenifere went on to say that there is no plan to evict any group of persons who are peacefully doing their enterprises from any section of the South West.
