The Lagos State Government has closed another abattoir in the Agege area as part of its ongoing enforcement of hygiene and sanitation standards in meat processing facilities.
Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Lagos State Meat Inspection Service carried out the operation after discovering severe violations of public health regulations at the facility.
According to authorities, the abattoir was operating in unsanitary conditions, with inadequate waste disposal systems, poor water supply, and failure to meet basic food safety requirements.
The closure follows similar enforcement actions taken against other slaughterhouses across the state in recent months as part of a broader crackdown on unhygienic meat handling practices.
A spokesperson for the Lagos State Government emphasised that the shutdown was necessary to protect consumers from health risks associated with contaminated meat.
“We cannot compromise on public health standards,” the official stated. “All abattoirs must adhere to strict hygiene protocols to ensure the safety of meat consumed by Lagos residents.”
Butchers and traders affected by the closure have been directed to relocate to approved slaughterhouses that meet regulatory requirements. The government has also promised to provide support for compliance, including training on proper meat handling procedures.
The move has drawn mixed reactions, with some residents applauding the enforcement while others express concerns about disruptions to the local meat supply chain.
The Lagos State Government maintains that the measure is critical in its efforts to modernise the meat processing industry and safeguard public health. Regular monitoring of abattoirs will continue to ensure sustained compliance with hygiene standards across the state.
