Twelve days after the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, his widow, Aisha Buhari, and their children have moved into his Kaduna residence, marking a new chapter for the family following the statesman’s passing.

The relocation occurred on Sunday, July 27, 2025, with the former First Lady receiving an official welcome from Kaduna State Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Balarabe and other government officials at the Nigerian Air Force Base.

The Kaduna home held special significance as Buhari’s last residence before his final medical trip to London, where he died on June 13, 2025, at age 82 after an undisclosed illness.

His body was repatriated two days later and buried in his ancestral hometown of Daura, Katsina State, with full military honours including a 21-gun salute and attendance by President Bola Tinubu, foreign dignitaries, and former leaders.

The Deputy Governor described Aisha Buhari’s arrival as “a homecoming that brings honour” to Kaduna, hinting at potential collaborations on maternal health and women’s empowerment initiatives she championed as First Lady. The family’s relocation from Daura to their Ungwan Rimi GRA residence in Kaduna concludes the immediate mourning period, though Islamic tradition prescribes a four-month waiting period for widows.

Observers note the move symbolises both continuity and change for the Buhari family, with the Kaduna residence now serving as their permanent base. The property had been under military guard since the former president’s death, with soldiers restricting access to journalists in the initial days of mourning.

While the family adjusts to life without Nigeria’s only leader to serve both as military head of state and democratically elected president, tributes continue to highlight Buhari’s mixed legacy of anti-corruption efforts alongside economic challenges during his tenure.

For the Buhari family, the Kaduna home now becomes the centrepiece of preserving his legacy while navigating life after the presidency.
