At least seven people were killed in a brutal attack by gunmen on Magajin Wando village in Dandume Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The assault occurred late on Friday night, around 11 p.m., plunging the community into terror as armed bandits opened fire randomly on residents.
The Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security, Dr. Nasiru Mua’zu, confirmed the tragic incident in a statement released on Saturday.
He detailed that the situation could have been far more devastating were it not for the immediate intervention of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps (CWC). The local security force swiftly engaged the invading bandits in a firefight and successfully pushed them back from the village.
However, a devastating turn of events followed this initial success. As the Watch Corps bravely attempted to evacuate the wounded to receive medical attention, the bandits laid a deadly ambush for them. Their vehicle was riddled with heavy gunfire and set ablaze. Despite the ferocious attack, the corps members displayed remarkable courage and managed to transport the injured to safety.
Commissioner Mua’zu explained that intelligence reports suggest the ambush was a retaliatory act by the bandits, who had suffered several casualties during the initial confrontation with the security volunteers.
He strongly condemned the senseless killings and praised the extraordinary bravery and dedication of the Community Watch Corps. The commissioner extended the government’s deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones and offered prayers for the swift recovery of those injured. He concluded by assuring residents that the government remains committed to collaborating with the military, police, and other security agencies to intensify operations and root out all criminal elements threatening the state’s peace.
