The Bayelsa state government has authorised wage increases for civil officials in its ministries, divisions, and agencies (MDAs) as part of initiatives to mitigate the consequences of the high cost of living.
Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, the deputy governor, made this known on Friday, April 12, when the leadership of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) south-south zone, led by its chairman, Comrade Bolum Martin, and vice chairman, Comrade Julius Laye, paid him a courtesy visit at Government House in Yenagoa.
According to a statement from the deputy governor’s media aide, Doubara Atasi, the salary award granted by Governor Douye Diri was consistent with the federal government’s request to states to use monies from the reduction of oil subsidies to alleviate workers’ economic suffering.
According to the announcement, Ewhrudjakpo has asked Mrs. Biobelemoye Charles-Onyeama, the Head of the State public Service, to work out payment arrangements for the N35,000 salary awards to all public servants on the state government payroll.
The deputy governor described the civil service as the engine room for implementing the government’s projects and objectives, and assured that the current administration in Bayelsa will continue to prioritise public workers’ well-being.
