A 75-year-old man was critically injured after armed herdsmen launched another violent attack on a community in Benue State.
The assault, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, has left residents in fear as attacks by suspected herdsmen continue to plague the region.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers invaded the community, shooting sporadically and causing panic among villagers.
The elderly victim was reportedly shot while attempting to flee to safety. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for gunshot wounds.
Local authorities have condemned the attack, describing it as another tragic episode in the ongoing crisis between farmers and herdsmen in the state.
Community leaders have called for increased security presence to prevent further attacks, expressing frustration over the persistent violence despite repeated appeals for government intervention. Many residents have been displaced, with some taking refuge in neighbouring villages due to the frequent raids.
The Benue State government has reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging security agencies to intensify efforts in securing vulnerable communities. However, locals remain sceptical, citing previous promises that have yielded little improvement in their safety against herdsmen.
