In a significant political development, the Benue State House of Assembly has suspended its immediate past Speaker, Aondona Dajoh, for a period of three months.
The suspension, which was handed down on Tuesday, is connected to an alleged attempt to impeach the state Governor, Hyacinth Alia.
The motion leading to the suspension was moved during plenary by Terna Shimawua, the lawmaker representing Kyan State Constituency.
It was subsequently seconded by his colleague, James Umoru from Apa State Constituency.
The situation carries a note of political irony, as Shimawua was among a group of lawmakers suspended by Aondona Dajoh just last week, prior to Dajoh’s resignation from the speakership on Friday.
Presiding over the session, the new Speaker, Alfred Berger, ruled on the motion.
He reviewed the proposed suspension period, reducing it from an initial six months to three months.
The decision was made without the customary legislative vote typically required for such disciplinary actions.
In a separate but related move, the Assembly also reversed a previous decision by confirming the nomination of Timothy Yangien Ornguga as a commissioner.
Ornguga, a law lecturer at the Benue State University in Makurdi, had earlier been rejected for the appointment during the tenure of the former Speaker, Dajoh. This confirmation marks a clear shift in the direction of the Assembly under its new leadership.
