Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Bode George has expressed shock at the decision of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to form a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Channels TV, George dismissed the ADC as “a ship that is already sinking” and accused the defectors of exacerbating the PDP’s internal crisis while now using it as an excuse to abandon the party.
Bode George emphasised that those leaving the PDP were key figures in its recent turmoil, yet they are now distancing themselves instead of working to resolve the issues.
He revealed that the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting would soon convene to finalise plans for the party’s convention, signalling its resilience. “The fact that we are holding this meeting shows the PDP, like an Iroko tree, has been resurrected,” he stated, contrasting the party’s stability with what he called the ADC’s lack of viability.
Atiku officially defected to the ADC on Wednesday, citing the PDP’s unending crises as his reason. George, however, framed the move as opportunistic, arguing that the coalition was driven by personal ambition rather than national interest.
He questioned the ADC’s capacity to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the new alliance as lacking structure and coherence. “Where is their strategy? This is a classless move,” he remarked, urging defectors to return to the PDP, which he called their “father’s house”.
The PDP stalwart also reiterated the party’s commitment to zoning, a principle he said Atiku and others disregarded by pushing for another northern presidential candidate after Buhari’s eight-year tenure. He warned that the coalition’s disintegration was inevitable once individual ambitions clashed, predicting failure against President Tinubu in 2027. Bode George’s remarks underscore deepening divisions within Nigeria’s opposition as realignments ahead of the next elections intensify.
