Sumner Sambo, the Director of News and Politics Editor at Arise News, has asserted that the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari performed more effectively in tackling poverty than the current government of President Bola Tinubu.
Sambo made this declaration while appearing as a guest on Arise Television’s Morning Show programme.
He commended former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, for shifting the national conversation towards substantive governance issues rather than political rhetoric, emphasising that such factual debates are crucial for the nation’s development.
According to Sumner Sambo’s analysis, the Buhari administration launched a greater number of poverty reduction initiatives between 2015 and 2023 compared to the efforts seen so far under President Tinubu.
Sambo elaborated that while El-Rufai’s personal impact on poverty figures in Kaduna might be debated, his central role in Buhari’s electoral victory and subsequent government strategies was significant.
He pointed to a perceived lack of focus from the current administration, particularly following the dismissal of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Beta Edu. Sambo suggested that Edu was performing well and that her removal had led to poor appointments within the critical poverty alleviation ministry.
He concluded that there is now a visible lack of strategic focus on poverty reduction under Tinubu’s leadership.
Sumner Sambo urged the government to treat this criticism with seriousness and urgently prioritize concrete measures to alleviate suffering across the country.
