Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy, born Damini Ogulu, has continued to solidify his global influence with his first-ever Met Gala after-party.
The prestigious Met Gala returned on Monday, May 6, 2025, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York, themed Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, celebrating Black men’s contributions to fashion.
Marking his second appearance at the Met Gala, Burna Boy turned heads in a red tuxedo paired with an oxblood eelskin cape. Styled by Ozwald Boateng, the first Black designer to own a Savile Row storefront, the outfit reflected a bold take on the gala’s theme. While his look received mixed reactions online, the singer remained unfazed.
Taking to Instagram, Burna Boy revealed he hosted his first Met Gala after-party, which was attended by an impressive lineup of celebrities. Among the notable guests were:
-
Hollywood stars: Hailey Bailey, Priyanka Chopra, Joe Jonas, and Keke Palmer.
-
Music icons: Central Cee, Busta Rhymes, Pink Pantheress, and Adam Lambert.
-
Nigerian and African stars: Author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Young Prince, and dancer Poco Lee.
Describing the event, Burna Boy referred to it as a “big family setting,” showcasing his knack for creating moments of connection among luminaries.
This isn’t the first time Burna Boy has made headlines on the global stage:
In 2024, Essence Magazine listed Burna Boy among the World’s Sexiest Men of the Moment, commending his commanding stage presence, impeccable style, and charisma. The same year, Time Magazine named him one of the Top 100 Most Influential People, a testament to his cultural and musical impact.
He remains a trailblazer as the only African artist to appear on the official 2024 Grammy cover alongside American and British icons.
Through his eccentric performances, unique voice, and sartorial boldness, Burna Boy continues to make Africa proud on the world stage. His presence at the Met Gala and subsequent hosting of an iconic after-party underscore his role as a global ambassador for African music and culture.
