Cardinals enter sistine chapel as conclave to elect new pope begins

The papal conclave to elect the next pope commenced on May 7, 2025, with 133 cardinal electors entering the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican.

This conclave follows the death of Pope Francis and is one of the largest in Catholic Church history, reflecting the Church’s global nature and the diverse backgrounds of its leaders.

The cardinals, representing over 70 countries, entered the chapel under the gaze of Michelangelo’s frescoes, marking the beginning of the secretive process that will determine the next leader of the Catholic Church.

The proceedings began with the “Litany of the Saints” and the hymn “Veni Creator Spiritus,” invoking the Holy Spirit’s guidance in their deliberations.

Once inside, the cardinals took an oath of secrecy, pledging not to disclose any details of the conclave proceedings. The doors to the chapel were then closed, sealing them off from the outside world.

The voting process will continue until a new pope is elected, with the results signalled by the colour of smoke emitted from the chapel’s chimney: black smoke indicates no decision, while white smoke signifies the election of a new pope.

The outcome of this conclave is eagerly awaited, as the Catholic Church seeks a leader who can address contemporary challenges and guide the faithful in the years to come.
