The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has strongly criticised both the federal and Benue State governments for their failure to protect citizens amid escalating violence in Benue State.
In a statement signed by Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, President of the CBCN and Archbishop of Owerri, the bishops expressed profound sorrow over the “utterly barbaric” attacks on defenceless communities.
The bishops lamented the cold-blooded killings, destruction of homes, and the anguish inflicted upon families, describing these acts as affronts to God and humanity. They emphasised that such violence underscores a complete breakdown of security in the region.
Highlighting the sanctity of human life, the CBCN asserted that governmental achievements in areas like infrastructure and salary payments are rendered meaningless if citizens’ lives are not safeguarded.
They called for immediate and decisive action from both state and federal authorities to restore peace, apprehend the perpetrators, and ensure justice for the victims.
The bishops warned that any government failing to prioritise the safety and protection of its citizens forfeits its fundamental responsibility and moral legitimacy. They urged the authorities to take swift action to prevent further loss of life and to uphold the nation’s commitment to justice and security.
