Veteran Nigerian singer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has strongly criticised former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai for his alleged role in undermining Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s chances in the 2023 election.

The entertainer-turned-activist accused El-Rufai of political insincerity following the former governor’s recent defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

El-Rufai, who was instrumental in President Bola Tinubu’s electoral victory, recently apologised to Nigerians for working against opposition candidates during the 2023 polls.

His current alignment with opposition figures planning to challenge Tinubu in 2027 has drawn mixed reactions, particularly given his previous strong opposition to Peter Obi’s candidacy.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Charly Boy lambasted El-Rufai, describing him as speaking from “both sides of his mouth.” The activist referenced El-Rufai’s admission of regretting his support for the APC during the last election, suggesting the former governor’s change of heart came only after being sidelined in the ruling party.

“Now that he’s been sidelined, he’s exposing their corruption,” Charly Boy wrote. “Abegi, go sit down for duty.” The criticism highlights growing skepticism about El-Rufai’s political manoeuvres as Nigeria’s opposition begins strategising for the 2027 general elections. The development underscores the complex political realignments taking place ahead of the next electoral cycle.
