Ghana has swiftly parted ways with head coach Chris Hughton in the aftermath of their disappointing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed this decision through a blunt statement, revealing that Hughton, the former manager of Newcastle United and Brighton, has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.
Ghana’s AFCON journey ended in despair as they finished their Group B campaign with just two points. The Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in the opening game, followed by 2-2 draws against both Egypt and Mozambique. Despite initially appearing set to advance, holding a 2-0 lead over Mozambique until the 90th minute of their final group match, an unexpected stoppage-time comeback by the Mambas shattered Ghana’s hopes.
The GFA’s statement expressed dissatisfaction with Hughton’s leadership, leading to the dissolution of the entire technical team of the Black Stars. The association hinted at unveiling a roadmap for the future direction of the national team in the coming days.
Hughton, who took over from Otto Addo after the 2022 World Cup, failed to bring about a significant improvement, marking Ghana’s second consecutive AFCON group stage exit. The team’s struggles continued into the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign under Hughton, with a win against Madagascar but a 1-0 defeat to Comoros. As Ghana prepares to face Mali and Central African Republic in the next qualifiers in June, a new manager is set to take charge, bringing fresh hope and direction to the Black Stars.
