Popular Nigerian comedian, Lawrence Oluwaseyitan Aletile, known as Seyi Law, is facing backlash for his recent comments mocking supporters of opposition political parties in the wake of the Presidential Tribunal judgement.
As reported by Kemi Filani, the Presidential aspirant for the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar, lost to President Tinubu in the tribunal’s decision, reaffirming his victory in the 2023 presidential election.
Seyi Law, a staunch supporter of President Tinubu, took to the internet to celebrate the verdict and taunt Peter Obi’s supporters. He questioned whether Obi’s supporters had started lamenting or were still holding out hope for a rerun. Seyi Law asserted that Peter Obi knew he didn’t win the election and only sought to disqualify Tinubu, believing he had a better chance in a rerun with Atiku.
Have they started crying already, or are they still hoping for a rerun? What a waste. I have said it before and I will say it again that PETER OBI knows he didn’t win the election. He knows. He only wanted Tinubu disqualified because he thinks he has a better chance of winning a rerun with @atiku.”
However, Seyi Law’s comments did not sit well with many, and he faced criticism from various quarters. One commenter labeled him a “failed comedian” and questioned if he was trying to revive his career, another criticized his comedic abilities, suggesting he had failed in that aspect; Some accused him of seeking attention and staying relevant through controversy. Seyi Law also faced criticism for his physical appearance in some comments, which were seen as disrespectful.
The comedian’s remarks have ignited a debate online, with both supporters and critics expressing their opinions on the matter.
