Days after Assad’s fall, Syria faces brutal legacy

A week following the spectacular overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, Syria is starting to face the terrible fallout from more than 50 years of Assad family control.

Children in Damascus, Syria’s capital hesitantly returned to school on Sunday for the first time since Assad’s exodus, marking a gradual return to calm.

According to Raghida Ghosn, a mother of three, “the school has asked us to send middle and upper pupils back to class.” “In two days, the younger ones will return,” she said to reporters.

Although just 30% of students have returned thus far, attendance is still low, but administrators are hopeful that the numbers will increase.

The Islamist organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, led an 11-day rebel onslaught that resulted in Assad’s flight last weekend.

The president’s departure brings an end to 13 years of civil conflict that began in 2011 when his administration violently suppressed pro-democracy uprisings, killing over 500,000 people and uprooting millions more.
