The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has once again urgently called upon the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the northwestern states of Katsina and Zamfara.
This demand is a direct response to the severe and ongoing insecurity crisis plaguing the region, characterised by relentless bandit attacks, abductions, and violence.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, reiterated this critical appeal during a television appearance on Arise TV. He sought to clarify the purpose of such a declaration, emphasising that it is not intended to remove the democratically elected governors from office.
Instead, Abdullahi explained, it would authorise the implementation of extraordinary measures and deploy significant resources specifically aimed at restoring peace and order to the troubled states.
Abdullahi provided a grim assessment of the situation, claiming that bandits have effectively seized control of large territories within Zamfara State.
He alleged that these armed groups are operating with impunity, imposing taxes on residents, carrying out mass abductions, and executing civilians.
He questioned the government’s inconsistency, pointing out that a state of emergency was previously declared in Rivers State over political unrest, where no lives were lost, while the daily slaughter of citizens in Zamfara has not prompted the same decisive federal response.
Furthermore, the ADC spokesman addressed recent comments from the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, who suggested that citizens should learn survival and self-defence skills.
Abdullahi interpreted this statement as a tacit admission that the current security apparatus is failing in its fundamental duty to protect Nigerians. While he agreed with the General’s assessment of the inadequacy, Abdullahi stressed that the primary responsibility for safety and security must always remain with the state.
