The Delta State House of Assembly has urged for the application of pertinent laws in order to apprehend and prosecute people who engage in open sex trade and hard drug usage in the state.
The House highlighted the need for open sex trade and illegal narcotics to be opposed in all dimensions in a resolution it approved at its plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Emomotimi Guwor.
The resolution was the result of a proposal made by Bridget Anyafulu, the representative for Oshimili South, and amended by Emeka Nwaobi, the majority leader.
In the resolution, the House encouraged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to provide instructions to the commissioner for women’s affairs, the community and social development department, and law enforcement authorities to take action to stop the unpleasant trend.
The Assembly argued for the necessity of routine advertising and sensitization programmes, calling for the installation of signs and banners in key locations to inform the public about the risks linked with the use of illegal narcotics and commercial sex.
It further compelled pertinent government organisations to regularly conduct trainings, counselling, and rehabilitation programmes as part of efforts to confront the depressing tales.
Anyafulu, who was in charge of the discussions, stated that the motion had become urgent because, if left unchecked, open sex trade and drug usage would continue to represent a serious threat to the next generation.
