Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has warned contractors against delivering substandard projects, vowing to sanction and blacklist offenders.
Oborevwori issued the warning late Tuesday during an inspection of state projects, including the 6.5-kilometer Achalla-Ibusa Road.
The governor expressed dissatisfaction with the poor quality of drainage work executed by the contractor, emphasizing that his administration would not tolerate shoddy construction.
“The work on the Achalla-Ibusa Road is bad, very bad. I have told the Commissioner and the Director that we cannot accept the drainage,” Oborevwori stated.
He explained that his decision to inspect the project followed negative feedback from individuals sent to assess it. The governor stressed that contractors must adhere to quality standards, noting that road inspections would be prioritized in 2025 to ensure only projects worthy of commissioning are approved.
“This will serve as a warning to other contractors. If you do a bad job, we will not pay you. Even if payment has been made, the site engineer responsible will face sanctions,” he said.
Oborevwori also warned site engineers against colluding with contractors to approve substandard work. “This government will not tolerate site engineers conniving with contractors to deliver substandard projects,” he added.
He called on contractors to prioritize quality, stating, “If you want to please me or be my friend as a contractor, do a good job. If you don’t, you can’t be my friend.”
The governor emphasized the importance of leveraging the dry season to expedite construction and maintain high standards across all state projects.
