Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah, the detained President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has initiated legal proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking the enforcement of his fundamental human rights. In his lawsuit, Isah is demanding ₦38.3 billion in damages, alleging that he was abducted and tortured.
The respondents named in the suit include Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu; the Department of State Services (DSS); and top officials of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).
The legal action follows a series of events that have garnered national attention. Atiku Isah had previously accused Seyi Tinubu and Minister Ayodele Olawande of offering him a ₦100 million bribe to promote President Bola Tinubu, which he claimed to have rejected.
Atiku Isah further alleged that this refusal led to his abduction and torture, purportedly in collaboration with the DSS and NTA officials.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Isah later retracted his allegations against Seyi Tinubu, admitting that the claims were fabricated.
He apologised to Seyi Tinubu, stating that he was misled by one Ladoja Olusola, who allegedly manipulated him to advance a personal agenda within the student body. Despite this retraction, Isah has proceeded with the lawsuit, maintaining his allegations against the DSS and NTA officials.
The case has sparked widespread debate, with various stakeholders expressing concern over the implications for democratic values and civil liberties in Nigeria.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi have both called for thorough investigations into the matter, emphasising the need for accountability and the protection of individual rights.
