The Defence Headquarters has announced that its troops operating in the Niger Delta region successfully prevented large-scale oil theft valued at over N545 Million in the month of August.
The disclosure was made by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major-General Markus Kangye, during the monthly military operations briefing held in Abuja on Thursday.
According to General Kangye, troops under Operation Delta Safe conducted targeted operations that led to the recovery of substantial quantities of stolen petroleum products.
The seized items included 619,236 litres of stolen crude oil, 106,147 litres of illegally refined automotive gas oil (diesel), 5,785 litres of kerosene, and 2,650 litres of petrol. The total estimated value of these recovered products is N545,872,819.
In addition to product recovery, the military operation resulted in the discovery and destruction of 97 illegal refining sites.
The troops also dismantled over 488 pieces of equipment used for illicit activities, including storage tanks, boats, dugout pits, and cooking ovens, significantly disrupting the operations of oil thieves in the region.
The security forces also made several arrests during the operations. Seventeen suspects were apprehended across Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa States. From these individuals, authorities recovered arms, ammunition, explosives, and a sum of N1.7 million in cash.
These comprehensive operations demonstrate the military’s continued commitment to combating economic sabotage and protecting the nation’s vital oil and gas infrastructure.
