Media personality Do2dtun has expressed his dissatisfaction with Nigerian artists who charge in dollars, stating that they risk spoiling the Afrobeat genre they collectively built.
Taking to Twitter, Do2dtun shared his concerns about artists charging their own people in dollars and urged them not to forget the togetherness that the Afrobeat genre represents.
This Afrobeat we all built together, na Una go use Una hands spoil am. You now charge your own people in dollars. Forget to unlock the togetherness the genre gives you and your people. Quite strange and bizarre,” he tweeted.
A netizen responded, mentioning the rise in the value of the dollar. In his reply, Do2dtun questioned why Nigerian artists can’t charge in Naira, their local currency, describing the act of charging in dollars in their own country as a “slave mentality.” He also questioned why artists don’t charge in Naira when performing in other countries.
You no fit charge for Naira? It’s a slave mentality charging in your country in dollars. Why are you not charging Naira in the UK or America,” Do2dtun remarked.
In the comments section, many users agreed with Do2dtun, expressing support for his viewpoint and criticizing the practice of charging in foreign currency within Nigeria. Some called for laws to prevent such practices, while others emphasized the need for originality and consideration for the economic conditions within the country.
This discussion follows Talent Manager Paulo Okoye’s recent inquiry into whether artists would adjust their prices in response to the economic challenges affecting the music industry, including declining concert numbers and the high cost of artist performances.
