The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has issued a severe warning to the Nigeria Police Force over the planned arrest of Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).
HURIWA slammed the claims against Ajaero, calling them politically motivated.
The charges against Ajaero include criminal conspiracy, terrorism funding, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.
HURIWA called this a “blatant attempt by the government to suppress dissent and intimidate the labor movement, which has consistently spoken out against anti-people policies.”
In a statement issued by its national coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, on Tuesday, HURIWA voiced grave worry over the deterioration of democratic norms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
HURIWA stated that the administration “is rapidly transforming Nigeria into a full-fledged dictatorship, a police state, and a banana republic characterized by lawlessness, impunity, corruption, and organized chaos.”
“This pattern of repression is not only undemocratic but also threatens Nigeria’s survival as a sovereign nation founded on justice and equity.”
