Ebonyi Govt demolishes shops, residential buildings for new flyover

The Ebonyi State Government has demolished stores and residential structures on Ogoja Road in the Abakiliki metropolis to make room for the construction of a flyover to alleviate persistent traffic at the congested Vanco intersection.

On Thursday afternoon, demolition work was still underway on both sides of the road.

The development, however, has elicited complaints from impacted shopkeepers and landlords.

Some of the impacted shopkeepers in the neighbourhood who talked with news media said they received no notification before the destruction began.

Okechukwu Orji and Madam Alice Nworie, two of the impacted shopkeepers, expressed that the unexpected destruction of their businesses without any proper notice had left them stuck, with no place to store their products. They went on to claim that the government did not compensate them.

When reached, Ebonyi State Commissioner for Works Stanley Lebechi Mbam informed reporters that the destruction was not a witch hunt against anybody, but rather an endeavour to beautify and decongest the metropolis.
