The Edo State Police Command has reportedly arrested a lady for allegedly purchasing products from vendors with counterfeit naira notes.
The lady was apprehended over the weekend at the Oregbeni market in Ikpoba Hill, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area, Edo State.
According to witnesses, the lady, who is in her 30s, had already purchased products worth more than N200,000 using counterfeit N1000 notes before being caught.
One of the dealers allegedly got sceptical of the mint and decided to compare it to older notes. The lady eventually found that the mint was a forgery and raised an alert.
Other merchants who confirmed that the money was counterfeit followed the suspect, who unwittingly moved from one shop to the next in search of products to purchase.
The alleged fraudster was apparently enticed inside one of the stores to look at other products, unaware that the shopkeepers had informed the police.
The lady was later detained for possessing counterfeit notes.
When reached, Chidi Nwabuzor, the Edo State Command’s Public Relations Officer, stated that he had not yet been briefed on the situation.
