Abdul Rasheed Bawa, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, was suspended by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday night.
The suspension is intended to allow for a thorough inquiry into his conduct while in office after serious charges of abuse of authority were levied against him by various anti-corruption stakeholders.
The agency’s Director of Operations, Mohammed Umar Abba, took over the business of his office after they suspended Bawa and told him to hand it over immediately. He will manage the affairs of the EFCC Chairman’s office.
Here are six facts about the interim EFCC chairman:
1. Mohammed Umar Abba was born on June 22, 1965, in Kano State’s Tudunwada Local Government Area.
2. Abba received his bachelor’s degree from Bayero University in Kano. He completed his one-year national service in the former Anambra State Police Command before joining the Nigeria Police Force. The Nigeria Police Academy in Kaduna State commissioned him in 1992.
3. CP Abba joined the Commission in January 2016 to lead the Counterterrorism and General Investigations (CTGI) Section at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja after they seconded him from the police.
4. The Commission appointed him as its Director of Operations in 2017.
5. They promoted him to the post of Commissioner of Police in 2019.
6. Abba, the most senior operational official, stepped in as the Commission’s Acting Chairman when they suspended the previous chairman, Ibrahim Magu, on July 9, 2020.
