Social commentator Mahdi Shehu has described the reported removal of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a positive development for both the party and Nigeria.
In a Friday post on his verified social media account, Shehu dismissed the circumstances of Ganduje’s departure – whether by resignation or forced exit – as irrelevant, maintaining that the important factor was his removal from the influential political position.
Mahdi Shehu specifically referenced longstanding corruption allegations against the former Kano State governor, including the controversial video that purportedly showed him receiving bundles of dollar bills from contractors.
The commentator called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately resume its investigations into Ganduje’s alleged financial misconduct, as well as separate corruption cases involving his wife. “We will be eagerly waiting for the EFCC to continue with his pending case and that of his wife regarding the dirty land deal,” Shehu stated.
The outspoken critic also urged the Kano High Court to accelerate proceedings on existing corruption charges against the former governor. Shehu framed Ganduje’s removal as just the beginning of an accountability process, declaring it “Day 1” and expressing anticipation for subsequent legal actions.
Ganduje has consistently denied all corruption allegations, maintaining that the viral dollar video was doctored. Neither the APC nor Ganduje had issued an official statement regarding the leadership change at the time of Mahdi Shehu’s comments.
