Dikko Radda, the governor of Katsina State, has negotiated the release of 222 detainees from the state’s different correctional facilities after they paid their fines.
Ibrahim Kaula-Mohammed, his Chief Press Secretary, stated this on Tuesday in Katsina.
He explained that the decision was part of a caring effort to offer happiness to convicts during the Holy Month of Ramadan so that they may enjoy Eid-el-Fitr with their families.
According to him, the convicts had been jailed because they were unable to pay penalties issued by various courts of law.
Hajiya Fadila Muhammad-Dikko, the state’s Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, told Kaula-Mohammed that the move will help to decongest prison facilities.
He said:
“The commissioner, who expressed sincere gratitude to the governor, also acknowledged the significance of this gesture by providing relief to those incarcerated for minor and non-capital offenses.
“The selection process for the beneficiaries involved thorough verification and recommendations to the state government for intervention in paying the fines holding them in the correctional facilities.”
