El-Rufai Accuses Kaduna Police of Constitutional Breach

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has publicly accused the state’s Commissioner of Police of violating the Nigerian constitution.

The allegation stems from a police summons issued to El-Rufai and seven members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The summons was connected to an earlier incident where the state police command allegedly prevented a scheduled ADC meeting from taking place in the state.

The police command had summoned the former governor and the party members for questioning over allegations of criminal conspiracy, incitement of public disturbance, mischief, and causing grievous hurt.

The directive required the ADC Chairman to ensure their appearance at the State Criminal Investigation Department on September 8th.

In a strong response delivered at a press conference held at his private residence in Kaduna, El-Rufai condemned the police’s actions. He characterized the summons as a “dangerous descent into lawlessness” by the state police command.

The former governor specifically challenged the legitimacy of a court order which the Commissioner of Police reportedly referenced as justification for disrupting the ADC meeting. El-Rufai stated that no such order was ever legally served on him or the party, noting that even if an injunction exists, it must be properly delivered before it can take effect.

He declared his intention to challenge the action in court, demanding to see the details and grounds of the alleged injunction and vowing that this would not be the end of the matter, promising that further steps would follow.
