Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has made a strong appeal to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging it to implement a complete electronic voting system with real-time transmission of results for the 2027 general elections.
He made these remarks during an interactive session titled “Moving forward together,” held in Owerri on September 5, 2025.
El-Rufai asserted that there is no justifiable reason for Nigeria to persist with an electoral system that remains vulnerable to human manipulation and fraud.
He pointed to the successful conduct of local government elections in Kaduna State in 2018 and 2021 as concrete proof that electronic voting is not only feasible but also effective within the Nigerian context. He emphasized that with the 2027 elections still years away, INEC has ample time to prepare and deploy the necessary technological infrastructure across the entire nation.
The former governor posed a direct question to stakeholders, asking why the country should not unanimously agree to eradicate electoral malfeasance by embracing technology.
He elaborated that modern electronic voting machines can be configured to perform multiple critical functions: identifying and verifying voters, creating a verifiable paper audit trail, automatically shutting down at the official close of voting, printing results for party agents at the polling unit, and seamlessly transmitting those results to collation centers.
El-Rufai maintained that this technological shift is the key to strengthening democratic stability and eliminating malpractices.
Recalling his own experience in Kaduna, he revealed that the ruling party had even lost some local government areas under the electronic system, yet those outcomes were accepted, demonstrating that the real barrier to national implementation is not logistics but a lack of political will.
