In a bold and unexpected move, billionaire entrepreneur and Twitter owner, Elon Musk, took to Twitter on Sunday, July 23, to announce significant changes to the social media platform’s branding. Musk revealed that he intends to bid farewell to the familiar Twitter brand and gradually phase out all bird-related elements.
The announcement came in the form of a tweet where Musk stated,
And soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds.” In a subsequent post, he further shared that if a compelling “X” logo is submitted, it will be adopted as the new face of the platform and will go live worldwide the very next day.
Accompanying his tweets was an image of the letter “X,” hinting at the direction in which the brand might evolve. During a Twitter Spaces audio chat, Musk confirmed that indeed the Twitter logo will change, expressing his belief that this transformation should have happened long ago.
Since Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in October, the platform has experienced a series of changes under his dynamic leadership. Notably, the company underwent a name change to X Corp, aligning with Musk’s ambitious vision of creating a “super app,” drawing inspiration from China’s multi-functional WeChat.
Twitter’s iconic logo, featuring a blue bird, has long been the platform’s most recognizable symbol. Musk’s plan to transition away from bird-related imagery marks a notable shift in the platform’s visual identity.
Despite the excitement surrounding the impending changes, Twitter remains vigilant in protecting its brand and reputation. The company’s website underscores the significance of the current logo and its association with the platform’s identity.
Elon Musk’s reign at Twitter has been marked by his propensity for stirring up controversy. Earlier this month, the platform faced criticism from users and marketing professionals when Musk announced daily tweet limits for various accounts. This move inadvertently led to the growth of Threads, a rival service owned by Meta, which quickly amassed over 100 million sign-ups within just five days of its launch.
As the tech world eagerly awaits the unveiling of the new Twitter branding, Musk’s innovative and disruptive approach promises to shape the platform’s future in intriguing ways, leaving users curious about what lies ahead for the social media giant.
