Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Face Celebrity Aversion

A cloud of celebrity aversion seems to hang over exiled royals Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, as reports suggest that high-profile figures, including their affluent neighbours Steven Spielberg, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Rob Lowe, are keeping their distance due to apprehensions about potential alienation from the future King of England, Prince William, and his wife Kate Middleton.

Notably, the California-based couple found themselves absent from the guest list of media mogul Oprah Winfrey’s birthday party, despite her headline-making interview with the Sussexes in March 2021.

According to Paula Froelich, NewsNation’s senior story producer, the decision to distance themselves from Harry and Meghan is primarily motivated by financial concerns. Celebrities are mindful of the potential impact on their businesses, particularly those seeking to promote their movies and Broadway plays in London or the West End. The reluctance of Prince William and Kate, who hold significant influence in the UK celebrity scene, to associate with anyone connected to Harry and Meghan reinforces this cautious approach.

Moreover, the snub from the White House adds to the couple’s challenges. When Meghan and Harry sought a flight on Air Force One following Queen Elizabeth’s state funeral in September, their request was denied. The White House reportedly feared that their presence on the presidential plane alongside President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden could strain diplomatic relations with Britain.

Hollywood’s apprehension also extends to concerns about potential revelations. Paula Froelich highlights the worry among celebrities that Harry and Meghan might share insider secrets, causing potential embarrassment. The Duchess and Duke of Sussex, who severed ties with the royal family in 2020, have shown a willingness to share their experiences, raising eyebrows among some A-listers.

Harry’s bestselling memoir, “Spare,” recounted an incident at Courtney Cox’s Los Angeles home, where he claims to have seen a box of “black diamond mushroom chocolates” in her refrigerator. Cox, however, refuted the account, denying any involvement with the mushrooms.

As the couple navigates their post-royal lives in California, the scrutiny from both Hollywood and the international stage continues. While some celebrities remain wary of association, others may be more open to embracing the Sussexes, recognizing the complexity and sensitivity surrounding their situation.
