Emefiele: Court Sets July 13 for Petition Hearing

The suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has filed a petition to enforce human rights at a Federal High Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT); the High Court has set July 13 as its hearing date. The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), State Security Service (SSS), and Director General are the respondents in the lawsuit.

Following the arguments of the parties’ reasons, Justice Hamza Muazu set a date for Tuesday. The application for Emefiele’s release from the SSS’s custody was also made by his attorney, Joseph Daudu (SAN). The Court had also instructed SSS to allow Emefiele access to his family and lawyers.

However, Tijani Gazali (SAN), the AGF’s legal representative, claimed that the executive – an arm of the Federal Government – made an administrative decision to arrest and imprison Emefiele by the SSS. He said a magistrate’s court had issued a warrant for the ex-CBN boss’ detention.

I. Awo, an attorney for the SSS, asserted that Emefiele constituted a flight risk since reliable intelligence indicated that, in the event of his release, he might attempt to escape the nation.
