The Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, maintain that no law in Nigeria prohibits the prosecution of minors.
AGF Fagbemi made the statement during the launching of the Law Corridor’s new office building and the presentation of a book on the current judicial system.
The AGF stated that the kids participated in the #EndBadGovernance demonstration were properly charged before the Abuja Federal High Court.
The nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest ran from August 1 to 10. Some demonstrators were detained and charged in various locations of the nation.
Many of the detainees arraigned in Abuja were children, causing indignation among Nigerians.
President Bola Tinubu approved the AGF on Monday to remove the charges against the children, and a Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed the complaint against 119 people who purportedly took part in the protest.
The young people were released, and Vice President Kashim Shettima received them at the State House.
The AGF, when responding to concerns that followed the arraignment, said:
“No law in this country says a minor cannot be tried, and I have also heard suggestions that they should go to a family court.
“The study of the law and the Constitution leaves you no other conclusion than that the Federal High Court has jurisdiction in matters bordering on treason and related issues.
“So, whatever the situation, the President has closed the chapter by his decision to have these young men released.”
