Former Lagos State Governor and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Babatunde Raji Fashola, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Resolve to Save Lives Nigeria (RTSL Nigeria), an international public health organisation dedicated to preventing cardiovascular diseases and epidemic threats.
The announcement was made on Friday by the organisation, which has been actively collaborating with governments and communities to address critical health challenges since establishing its Abuja office in 2022.
Dr. Tom Frieden, President and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives, expressed enthusiasm about Fashola’s appointment, highlighting his extensive public service record.
“We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Fashola to the RTSL Nigeria Board of Directors. He has demonstrated a commitment to improving lives and livelihoods in Nigeria through more than two decades of public service,” Frieden stated.
Fashola, a former Minister of Power, Works and Housing under President Muhammadu Buhari, is widely recognised for his leadership during critical periods, including Nigeria’s response to the 2014 Ebola outbreak.
His efforts in managing the crisis earned him international accolades, such as the Stephen J. Solarz Award from the International Crisis Group. Before his ministerial role, Fashola served as Chief of Staff in Lagos State and later as governor from 2007 to 2015, where he implemented significant infrastructural and governance reforms.
In his response, Fashola expressed gratitude for the appointment, stating his readiness to contribute to the organisation’s objectives. “I look forward to helping continue the progress in stopping preventable deaths from cardiovascular diseases and infectious disease outbreaks,” he said.
Professor Ibrahim Abubakar, a fellow board member and Dean at the University College London Faculty of Population Health Sciences, praised Fashola’s inclusion, emphasising his proven leadership during health emergencies and his wealth of governance experience.
